On view at the Manhattan Beach Creative Arts Center May-June 2014, surroundings explores the ways in which aspects of the landscape are collectively formed and assigned meaning. surroundings mines the emotional meaning of the forest, beach, and/or built environment by appealing to the elements of loss, love, and nostalgia embedded in each site. These emotional meanings associated with place can resonate on a collective scale, and/or register as an individual voice. Likewise, the works in surroundings gain their identity from their collectively constructed nature, while at the same time showcasing the commonalities, differences, and serendipitous linkages that occur among the individual contributions.
