Temporary Residence at Ultra!
Torrance Art Museum
Temporary Residence, 2015-2021, Crowd-sourced knitted and crocheted acrylic and mixed fiber yarns over metal yurt frame, 10 feet high by 12 feet wide by 12 feet deep
For Dwell on Design 2015, artist-in-residence Yarn Bombing Los Angeles presented “Temporary Residence”, a participatory art installation raising awareness for San Fernando-based Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission. Over the course of three days, participants had the opportunity to sew together blankets from excess granny squares contributed to YBLA’s 2013 capstone project, CAFAM Granny Squared. Each completed granny square blanket was added to a yurt structure, setting up a colorful and ephemeral “Temporary Residence”. In addition to creating visual awareness about the transient nature of the homeless community, the granny square blankets were donated to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission at the end of YBLA’s artist residency.
The current iteration of this installation at Torrance Art Museum revisits thematic elements from some of our past projects CAFAM: Granny Squared, Dwell On Design, Yarn-O-Polis, and Accept, Embrace, Resolve. We thank all of our collaborators and contributors who make these large projects happen.
