The wishing tree is a popular folk tradition in Eastern Europe and Asia where a tree is adorned with pieces of fabric, coins, drawings and written messages attached to the tree with yarn or string in hopes of fulfillment of a wish. The tradition derives from the Turkic Shaman rituals practiced in ancient Central Asia that consider trees sacred as the roots, trunk and branches of a tree exist all three realms: the underground, earth and the heavens.
